EDUC 630 - Presentions - curious about document cameras/ELMOs in classrooms

While we are focusing on presentations this week, I became curious about the use of ELMOs, or document cameras.  One of my former schools had begun purchase of ELMOs for classroom use.  We were trying to improve literacy across the curriculum, so administration encouraged us to use them for "read alouds," as well as for worksheets and the like.  I found them helpful for sharing student work, such as Science notebooks.  I could, with student permission, show how data was displayed or good examples of observations.  We even had a digital microscope to use for showing specimens when we studied cells.

Now to my question, are any of us using document cameras to support instruction?  If so, how?  For me, a document camera is not practical with a virtual classroom.  I have found my webcam can be used in a similar fashion.

  1. I used an Elmo daily. I used it to demonstrate problems, practice manipulation, model what was expected, take still photos or video of a demonstration or as a tool to go over a homework or other assignment.

I know you teach online, but it works great to tape something that you were writing or demonstrating on a desktop surface. Let me know what you are teaching and I will try to help out with ideas. I would recommend looking into it.

  2. Tiffany,
Now, I can upload my documents to my whiteboard and mark them on the screen with my Bamboo pen tablet. It work really well. I had forgotten Elmos can capture your work. I'll look into them. Thanks!
